SAMPLE: Analyse information from secondary sources to prepare a case study to show how an environmental change can lead to changes in a species - Prior to the Industrial Revolution in the late 18th century, there existed 2 main types of peppered moths (Biston betularia) - The majority of peppered moths were light coloured and were at a selective advantage as they camouflaged against the white lichen on the trees. - The black variety could be more easily seen by predators, hence their overall numbers were low. - After the industrial revolution, selective pressure of the pollution resulted in physical changes to the environment which caused the trees to blacken with soot deposits. As this soot spread, the light coloured lichen that grew on the trees began to die off, leaving trees dark. - Light moths can no longer camouflage as they become easier prey, however the black moths were able to camouflage better and gain the selective advantage. They became more dominant in the population - Industrial melanism → Describes a population that changes during industrialisation so that the darker form becomes predominant as a result of natural selection
