Biology Revision –Blueprint of Life Syllabus point 1a –outline the impact on the evolution of plant and animals of changes in physical conditions in the environment: ➢ a change in the physical conditions of the environment can impact on the evolution of plants and animals. ➢ Note: a change in physical conditions could be a change in temperature or a change in rainfall etc. ▪ this change could have a large effect on a population of plants or animals. Different traits could be more advantageous than others; which would be passed onto their offspring. ✓ For example: Snow gums living in the Snowy Mountains. In higher altitudes the trees are shorter and have smaller leaves due to lower temps, more wind exposure because of a change in physical conditions. 1a –outline the impact on the evolution of plant and animals of changes in chemical conditions in the environment: ➢ A change in the chemical conditions of the environment can impact on the evolution of plants and animals. A chemical change could be: ▪ A change in salinity in water or in soil, or introducing insecticide into an environment etc. this change could have a large affect on a population of plants and animals. Different traits could be more advantageous than others, which would be passed onto the offspring. (via natural selection) ✓ For example: mosquitoes and the insecticide DDT. More mosquitoes now have a resistance to the insecticide. 1a –outline the impact on the evolution of plants and animals of changes in competition for resources: ➢ If individuals within a population (of plants or animals) have adaptations that make them better able to obtain food, resources or produce young more effectively, it is these adaptations/features that will be passed onto the offspring by natural selection. ✓ For example: the introduction of organisms (like rabbits, foxes) into a ecosystem causes serious competition for resources. Organisms with the most favourable adaptations will survive and pass traits onto the offspring, others could die –extinct.
