Cell Theory states all living organisms composed of cells and that all cells are produced from pre-existing cells. Prokaryotes: basic type of cell; unicellular organisms o does not possess a defined nucleus o possess structures which produce proteins in cell cytoplasm cell membrane ribosomes genetic material (cytoplasm, cell membrane) - 0.1 – 1 µm in size; smaller than eukaryotes - 3 major shapes: rod, spherical and spiral - Divide by binary fission - Subdivision: archaea and eubacteria Eukaryotes: cells/organisms which that possess a membrane bound nucleus which stores genetic information - Contains membrane-bound organelles, and a membrane-bound nucleus. - Include plant and animal cells and fungi cells - 7 – 100 µm in size - Eukaryotic cells can be unicellular, colonial, or multicellular - Divide by mitosis and meiosis
