Physical Environment - Easy access to sea (and therefore, also to trade and communication that crossed the Mediterranean) - On the Coast of the Wide Bay of Naples in Campania - Bay dominated by the Volcano Mount Vesuvius and Herculaneum lay below it, 7km away on a natural terrace. Volcanic Features - Mt Vesuvius was dormant & in Roman times covered by woods. - Vesuvius not seen as threat but Greek geographer Strabo recognised that it was a volcano & noted stones that had been on fire. Natural Resources - Climate is ideal for agriculture. - Crops included wheat, barley, cabbage, broad-beans, dates, figs, olives, chick peas and olive oil produced by crushing olives. - Rich soil favoured planting of vineyards. - Slopes of Vesuvius had winepress and wine storage as well as having vineyards terraced onto them, in the Roman style. - Fishing was major industry, with the production of garum (fermented fish paste) being a Pompeian specialty. Salt used for fish preservation.
