Peter Sculthorpe
Peter Sculthorpe (1929 – 2014), one of Australia’s most prolific and influential composers has left behind a legacy in his uniquely Australian sounding music. He is known for formulating a musical style that is relatable to the social climate and physical characteristics of the country. Sculthorpe believed that Australia, with its vast, largely uninhabited and monotonous landscape, required uncomplicated music. (Macarthur, S 2014) Thus he developed his own unique style of Australian music, free from the constraints of Europe, incorporating the sounds of Aboriginal music and the Australian fauna. Sculthorpe’s compositions Port Essington, The Song of Tailitnama and From Ubirr (String Quartet 12) display his uniquely Australian sound.
