Topic 1 – Law and Society:
Rules:
- Are established by groups of people to protect the rights and responsibilities of their individual members
- Tell you how you are expected to behave in various situations
- Are based on established customs that have evolved in a society over time
- Are also based on morals and ethics and reflect the values in which a society believes
Rules – regulations that are based on principles, and which govern conduct
Laws:
- Are based on rules, but they have more status because they are officially recognized by the state
- Are created, changed and interpreted within an official government framework
- The police and the courts can enforce a law
Laws – a set of rules that are officially recognized by the state
Whereas rules are only binding on a particular group laws apply to everyone in the community.
