Business Notes
The Pedestrian’ by Ray Bradbury
The enormous high tech electrically powered train hovers on the iron rails with the purring sound of a cat, floating on sparking controlled repulsion. In 2080, A.I took over all major city infrastructure, with the centre as the brain, and all its suburbs the nerve clusters surrounding the central electronic organ.
I check my iGlasses. On my retina is projected the time for the next train departure. I am a digital currency trader working for the city of Shanghai and I am one of its upper district citizens with a good Social Credit score.
I walk past the rows of citizens lining up for entry and approach a corridor lined with lime and emerald colours. In Shanghai, Green denotes the highest Social Credit tier, over 800. Only the best citizens who are the most deserving get to use the Green public facilities. We have earned it, because we have been obedient and good since we were children. In the corridor, a plant wall gives off a rich scent of nature, something that no longer exists in Shanghai outside of areas made for Green citizens. Colour class codes display the different variety of permitted privileges or prohibitions of their class. Comparatively, the Red Zones walkway looked like a trip down to hell.
