Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a recessive genetic disease affecting over 100,000 individuals worldwide (Cystic Fibrosis Canada, 2020), with approximately 1,000 new cases of CF per year (Better Health Channel, 2019). Vertex Pharmaceuticals developed Trikafta, a prescription medicine that treats the underlying cause of the disease, which is the F508del mutation on the CFTR gene and improves the quality of life of CF sufferers worldwide. The SHE Key Concept of Development was addressed through the breakthrough of Trikafta because previous treatments like oxygen therapy, nasal surgery, airway clearance technique, and other medications were not highly effective in treating CF. The SHE Key Concept of Influence has been demonstrated as the social and ethical considerations of financial and physical impact on a patient’s lifestyle influenced the development of the revolutionary treatment, the Trikafta drug.
