King Arthur is one of the most well-known figures in British history, being transformed from medieval literature into present-day pop culture. He came from a time, where Britain was finally breaking free from Roman rule, where Britain began to form a national identity. Widely considered as one of the most important periods in the country’s formative years, it is also the period that is least documented. The knight himself is accompanied by a story of bravery and epic battles, which helped him cement his place as a legend. However, historians are divided on whether he lived the life of brilliance. Many historians are even showing major doubts that he even existed. From the evidence that is currently available, the argument strongly leans towards the fact that King Arthur did not exist at all or at least was a series of lesser decorated kings combined into one highly decorated King Arthur. To examine this issue, the archaeological and textual evidence will be discussed, before considering the discrepancies and the lack of overall mention in medieval sources. The weaknesses of the logic behind many of the items and people that are associated with Arthur will also be debated, as well as the clear differences between adaptations of the hero, which will weaken the validity of the overall Arthurian legend. A case will then be made for the reason that King Arthur was made up of multiple warrior kings and finally, the discussion of why these pieces were written will be explored.
