The coursework will involve a case study of Carliol House at the junction of Pilgrim Street and Market Street in Newcastle upon Tyne. It is designed to illustrate the complexity of re-developing a listed building within a wider city-centre planning and regeneration context. Some background information will be supplied, but students will be expected to conduct an in-depth archival search of other publicly available information – particularly the regeneration/development plans/briefs for the wider East Pilgrim Street Regeneration area and the sites limited planning history (significant material is available online at Newcastle City Council website) In addition, one seminar will be allocated for students to visit the site. Students will also be expected to personally visit the site to gain an appreciation of the broader surroundings at different times of the day. The site is within the city centre (at the junction of Pilgrim Street and Market Street) Students should also relate their proposal for the site to the major on-going development activity in the urban core of Newcastle upon Tyne
