How Is Freedom Explored in Both Frankenstein and the Handmaid's Tale

Freedom is defined by the ability to express without restrictions nor the fear of consequences. As such, its utopian promises seem to draw the attention of the writers who wish to also explore just how fragile the concept truly is. Both Atwood and Shelley allow the theme of freedom to dictate the characters and outcomes of their texts in order to unravel the harsh facade of freedom. Arguably Shelley’s exploration of the theme is inspired by the values associated with the age of enlightenment, with society attempting to break free from the shackles of religious confinement. On the other hand , Atwood’s exploration of the theme seems to stem from the oppressive natures of patriarchy that tainted American society within the 20th Century.
