Modern capitalism, as said by Weber (1905) is essentially rationalized capitalism in which all decisions are made to serve the single objective of maximizing capital. Weber (1905) compares today’s ideals to traditional capitalism where people would rather choose to enjoy their life as opposed to a hyper focus on money, of which they deem that, “-there’s no point in making money if it’s not to enjoy life”. (Chua, 2022) In conjunction to that, the infamous notion of an ‘iron cage’ is the idea that rationalized capitalism is a system that we may not like, but which we are no longer capable of changing. (Chua, 2022) We are most definitely living in an iron cage today with our lives being governed by rationalized institutions that causes us to live our lives as if it is a “-permanent enterprise-”, contributing to the “-rational capitalistic organization of labor” (Weber, 1905). This is evident in the fact that social capital has been devalued into personal investments, perpetuated by the infamous quote of “Your Network is Your Net Worth”. This adheres to the global decline and lack of empathy amongst society as there is a shared concentration of accumulating wealth. Lastly, this deficiency perpetuates in governmental institutions and large corporations with regards to the climate crisis, of which is strongly supported by the recent protest done by scientists themselves in this year’s Extinction Rebellion movement (Gayle, 2022).
