Research Essay - HH4025: History of Disease – Human Evolution, Disease and Health Description: For this study, the paper will examine prevailing hypotheses on the origin, migration and dispersal of the Austronesian peoples. Through this process, we will focus on the widely accepted ‘Out of Taiwan’ model, mapping the origins of the Proto-Austronesian group to Taiwan and examining its eventual movement out of Taiwan to nearby geographical regions due to the advent of agriculture. A sizeable amount of time and focus will be spent on the role of agriculture, as it is considered to be of major importance in leading the migration efforts of the original Austronesian groups. Moreover, we will also examine a competing hypothesis, the ‘Slow boat to Melanesia’ theory, which suggests that the origins of Polynesian islanders are not from Taiwan as first believed. Although not directly linked to the original question on the origins of the Austronesians, this will serve to provide counterpoints into our research, raising questions over the dispersals of the Austronesians, and if they indeed were the ancestors of the Polynesians. In short, I ask the following questions: 1) how important was agriculture in the role of the Austronesian expansion, and 2) is the role of agriculture undermined by new research on the ancestry of the Polynesians. This paper serves to contribute to a large existing body of research over the Austronesians and Polynesians, combining various arguments and theories which link the origins, dispersals and associations of these language and genetic groups together into a coherent and compelling sequence.
