Assignment brief: For this project, you are required to work individually. Each student has to write a 5 page essay about a specific (clearly defined) ‚evocative media object‘ – in the words of Sherry Turkle: about „a thing you think with“. What is an essay? It is a piece of writing that gives your own argument. The definition is vague, overlapping with those of a paper, an article, and other forms, which gives you many options. The main distinction is between formal and informal ones: Formal essays are characterized by serious purpose, dignity, logical organization, whereas the informal essay is characterized by the personal element, humor, graceful style, rambling structure, unconventionality. Feel free to choose between the two. You may even decide to fuse (or ‘cross’) informal and formal characteristics, but this is a somewhat delicate task. If you want to go for this option, make sure that your essay demonstrates that this is a conscious decision; it should not appear as if you could not manage to handle the difference
