Investigating the Properties of Period 3 oxides
FHSC1134 - Inorganic Chemistry
11 Pages • Essays / Projects • Year Uploaded: 2022
Going across Period 3 from left to right, the elements changes from metals to non-metals. The structure and chemical bonding of the oxides changed because of the melting point and boiling point of the oxides (Cy Tam, 2019). They consist of either ionic bond or covalent bond. To determine their structure and bonding, distilled water is added to Period 3 oxides to observe their appearance, colour, solubility and pH value. The purpose of adding water to Period 3 oxides is to examine their acid or base nature of the Period 3 oxides. The reaction of Period 3 oxides with water determine their structure and bonding too. In terms of electrical conductivity, none of these oxides can conduct electricity in their solid state because they have no mobile electrons to generate electricity (Jim Clark, 2019). However, the Period 3 oxides elements which consist of ionic bond are able to conduct electricity in molten state. They conduct electricity because they have mobile electrons which can generate electricity (Joe Leng, 2019). Oxides which consist of covalent bond cannot conduct electricity in both solid and molten state because they are formed by two non-metals which involves sharing of electrons thus they have no free electrons to generate electricity (Jim Clark, 2019).
