Dental caries, infections and other changes in the bone density, and the periodontal ligament, appear radiolucent as X-rays readily penetrate these less dense structures. Teeth appear more radio-opaque because less radiation penetrates them to reach the film. Dental restorations may appear more radio-opaque or radiolucent, depending on the density of the material.
