Osmosis can be defined as the net movement of water through a semipermeable membrane, which is caused by the difference of solute concentrations on both inner and outer spaces of the membrane. A semipermeable membrane allows the movement of water to pass through freely while limiting the movement of certain substances, such as the molecules or ions of some solutes. On either side of the membrane, the amount of solute molecules will affects the concentrations of free water molecules. More water molecules will strike to the pores which exist on the membrane with higher free water concentration, and thus causes a net diffusion of water from the compartment with higher concentration of free water to the compartment with lower concentration of free water.
