Nowadays, patient anxiety continues to be an ongoing concern in the dental environment although there are modern advances in painless dentistry. Dental anxiety can be considered as a universal phenomenon with a high prevalence worldwide and not limited to a population or country. Moreover, the prevalence of dental anxiety can be seen across all age groups. Dental anxiety is a term used to describe fear, anxiety or stress in a dental setting. Dental anxiety can be associated with certain triggers such as needles, drills or the dental setting in general. Many people associate the sight, smell, and sound of a dental clinic with the pain of treatments that they have had in the past. Besides, some mental health conditions including generalised anxiety disorder, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, or a previous history of head and neck trauma can also increase the risk of a person experiencing dental anxiety. The trouble is that this fear and anxiety causes them being scared to visit the dentist and can result in delaying or avoiding dental treatment.
