“Settler colonialism is a structure, not an event” (Wolfe). Issues of identity and citizenship have been fierce ever since the first European settlers arrived on the continent and imposed their regime on the Native Americans. It is an ongoing structure of power that allows for the continuous persecution of Indigenous peoples and their cultures. This is held up by the deep-rooted systemic racism that exists in settler-colonial states, in which the structures in existence were developed to benefit the colonists at the expense of the Indigenous peoples. This power dynamic continues to be upheld in mainstream society, leading to the loss of cultural identity for many Indigenous generations.
