Kenny (2015, p 57) describes the term ‘community’ as a group of people who share a commonality of identity and interests, that come together either face to face or virtually to express unity, or to pursue particular common ends. The chosen community for discussion came together with the commonality of illness identity. The individuals suffer from a condition called Acute Intermittent Porphyria (AIP), which is one of eight rare disorders caused by abnormalities in the metabolism of the blood pigment haemoglobin. The most prevalent issue in our community is the dearth of knowledge and awareness amongst health care professionals, causing people to go undiagnosed. This essay will focus on three key points to address the issue. Firstly, describing what AIP is and how those diagnosed make up a community. Secondly, how a lack of knowledge and awareness affects the members, giving examples based on the members perspective. Lastly, a possible approach to address this issue, giving the members a fair chance at a quality of life.
