Although UWS’s six intricate campuses have demonstrated changeable attitudes towards removing tobacco activities on campus grounds through a range of smoke-free policies and ramifications of $550 fines, smoking behaviours continue to occur. This has been observed by the author of this report as a student of two separate campuses whereby offsite cigarette smoking has been observed as occurring behind buildings and on grassy areas, the ponds and bus pick-up areas with an intention as to avoid discovery by patrolling security officers. This attitude stems from UWS smoking policies stating the parameter for smoking is 100m outside of campus. (UWS, n.d.). As a result this leaves students assuming there is leeway upon leaving university gates and leads to peers joining in for social purposes also contributing to reoccurring smoking behaviours and attitudes. For this reason it is crucial to employ information strategies within the institution such as on campus media campaigns whether multi-media or print produced campaigns in order to amend and reduce tobacco use and ETS exposure and increase tobacco cessation behaviours, values and attitudes in all students, staff and visitors for the benefit of surrounding people and fauna.
