SHORT SNIPPET: Definition & classification of global phenomena • Global Phenomena are major natural or human events; processes or activities that are distributed globally, and therefore affect either the whole planet or significant parts of it Distribution • The world's population is unevenly spread throughout the Earth, with no obvious patterns except that there are higher numbers in the northern hemisphere and often close to coasts. • Regions with high population density (over 10 people per square km) include central & Southern Asia (e. Eastern China, India, Indonesia), much of Europe (e.g. England, Germany) and eastern USA. • Regions with low population density (less than 5 people per square km) include much of Australia, northern Africa, eastern Russia & Northern North America Change Over time: • Relatively slow growth rates in world population occurred between 1750-1850 • Increasing gradually from 1850-1950 (Population approx. doubled) • Rapid growth then occurred from 1950, with the population changing from about 2.5-6 Billion in the space of 50 years. Growth rates are starting to slow down a little & will continue to do so over coming decades • Despite these global trends, there have been some spatial changes over time in population e.g. past 50 years or so, Asia & African populations have been growing most rapidly, with Europe growing the least rapidly. • Over the coming decades, Asia's growth will slow, Africa's growth rate will continue to be high whilst parts of Europe will experience negative growth
