Medea Essay Regarding How Euripides Positions the Audience, Whether They Should Empathise with Medea or Jason

English

3 Pages Essays / Projects Year: Pre-2021

This is an essay on Medea that argues which character ultimately gains the empathy of the audience. Though it is initially Medea who wins the empathy of the audience, the play demonstrates that Jason is the one we are left sorry for. Accordingly, it is the men in the play who suffer the most at the hands of Medea. While it is true that Jason left Medea for a royal title and a 'princess' bed', this action was to better his own house. Similarly, we must remember that Jason was born with a title and a heir to the royal throne. With regards, the audience must empathise with Jason's situation having lost his legacy, and hence respect his quest to regain his title. Accordingly, it is Medea's 'half born' temper that acts as a catalyst for the destruction to come: the deaths of the children, Glauce and King Creon - all to seek revenge on a man who left her to seek a greater status.
