Conceived in 2005, The Responsibility to Protect (R2P) was adopted in response to the mass genocides that occurred in Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur (Carlstrom 2011). Focusing upon the protection needs of victims, R2P was aimed at protecting civilians and civilian populated areas against genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity (Bellamy & Wheeler 2014). The R2P was intended as the convention that the world have a responsibility to prevent wars and protect vulnerable populations, garnering the support of hundreds of heads of state (Carlstrom 2011).
