Essay

This student studied:
University of Sydney - PSYC1001 - Psychology 1001

Got a high distinction for this essay last year (92%) Abstract. Harden (2012) suggests that the timing of sexual initiation can predict relationship satisfaction and the number of romantic partners later in life. This essay will discuss self-esteem and attachment style as the most likely explanations for timing of first sex and later romantic outcomes. Through the analysis of research that has both endorsed and contradicted Harden’s (2012) findings it is established that low self-esteem and insecure attachment are associated with lower relationship satisfaction and quality and more romantic partners. Conversely, it is shown through research that high self-esteem and secure attachment are linked to later sexual initiation, greater relationship satisfaction and fewer romantic partners. Different results for each sex will be addressed as well as the limitations that were found within both supporting and contradicting research, indicating that further research may provide additional insights into this field.
