Assignment 1 for Managing People and Organisations
21129 - Managing People and Organisations
2 Found helpful • 9 Pages • Essays / Projects • Year: Pre-2021
The practices in culture have changed in the post-bureaucratic era In this essay I am going to argue that in the post-bureaucratic era there is a strong emphasis on using culture as an effective means of soft power for managerial control to make an organisation more stable and efficient. Organisational culture in the post-bureaucratic era goes beyond the rational elements of rules, regulations and systems and looks at various elements of the organisation to generate a set of beliefs, norms and values to unify the workforce (Carrol W and Mills A J, 2006). In this essay I will draw upon numerous readings to explore differing opinions on cultural organisation in today’s society. By drawing on Karreman, D. & Alvesson, M. (2004), DuGay (2000) and others I will provide an overview of culture in the post bureaucratic era and demonstrate why more organisations are adopting to use it rather than the bureaucratic approach. Furthmore with the help of Josserand, E., Villeseche, F. & Bardon, T. (2012) and Rosen, M. (1988) I will explore why culture makes an organisation more stable and the result of having a unified workforce. Lastly I will assess the issues surrounding culture using information from Brewis, J. (2007) and complemented by various others. I will discuss if it is ethically correct to try and manage a group of people through one set of values, norms and beliefs considering there will always be diversity within an organisation.
