PHIL4102 - Research Topics: 20th Century Philosophy
10 Pages • Essays / Projects • Year: Pre-2021 • Previously uploaded under: PHIL2600 - Twentieth Century Philosophy
2. What is the “Verification Principle”? Describe some of the problems that were encountered in trying to formulate the principle precisely. ! In this essay I will describe what the verification principle is and how it came to be formulated. I will focus primarily on Ayer’s exemplification of the verification principle in his book Language, Truth, and Logic. I will consider various modifications and objections to the principle from Alonzo Church and John Foster. The first half of the essay will concentrate mostly on describing the verification principle and the shift from Ayer’s initial version of the principle to his modified version. The second half of the essay will be concerned with objections to the modification that Ayer made in his second formulation. It will be concluded that the verification principle still requires modification if it is to stand as a fool proof theory.
