Short Report on Compare Ibotenic acid structure to glutamate Ibotenic acid (C5H6N2O4) is a naturally occurring drug commonly found in Amanita muscaria as well as other similar mushrooms of the same family. Ibotenic acid is a hallucinatory drug and is a powerful psychoactive toxin that influences the plasticity of the brain (Robner et al., 1994). It acts as an agonist to the group 1 metabotropic glutamate receptor, group 2 metabotropic glutamate receptor and NMDA metabotropic glutamate receptor (Holden, 2003).

It acts as an agonist to the group 1 metabotropic glutamate receptor, group 2 metabotropic glutamate receptor and NMDA metabotropic glutamate receptor (Holden, 2003). The structural similarities between Ibotenic acid and the glutamate neurotransmitter as well as the ability of Ibotenic acid to bind to the NMDA glutamate receptor sites and ACPD receptor sites allows it to act as an agonist to glutamate (Egebjerg et al., 2002). When ingested; toxicity arises through the interaction of the NMDA receptors and ACPD receptors that are being activated in the central nervous system.
