Two alternative conceptions of communication have dominated this field of study in the 20th century – the transmission and ritual views. While ‘transmission’ focuses on imparting, sending or giving information, ‘ritual’ implies sharing, participation and developing a sense of community. James W. Carey (1989, p. 18) argues that the ritual view of communication “is directed not to the extension of messages in space but toward the maintenance of society in time; not the act of imparting information but in the representation of shared beliefs”. He also notes that the ritual and transmission views are not mutually exclusive. Think critically about the relevance of these two conceptions of communication (transmission and ritual) in light of 'new' media. Are these theories adequate to describe how we use and create media forms today? In developing your argument refer to the theory covered in lectures, readings and tutorial discussions from Weeks 1 - 4 and refer to a minimum of two examples of media forms, or media practice, as evidence to support your claims.
