I focused on question 7 for GOVT 1641 which was "How effective are social movements in bringing about political change? Choose one of the social movements identified above (race, gender, sexuality, democracy or climate change). Draw on evidence from two authoritarian countries or two democratic countries to explain what social movements can and cannot achieve." I achieved a Distinction mark of 75%. Comments were: You need to work on paragraphs planning and organization. Effective paragraphing is vital for a coherent argument. Paragraphs are the building blocks of an argument. Each paragraph should express a distinct idea. Try to use a 'topic sentence' (the first sentence of a paragraph) to state the basic idea of that paragraph, which is then elaborated by argument and evidence in the succeeding sentences. It should be possible for a reader to grasp the outline of your argument by skimming over the opening sentences of paragraphs. Generally, avoid beginning a paragraph with facts, and then explaining their significance or drawing conclusions at the end of the paragraph. It is far clearer to begin with an argumentative topic sentence, and then to substantiate that assertion in the ensuing sentences. Plan your essay before and during the writing process. Try drawing diagrams to work out the relations between various arguments. Think carefully about the structure of your argument. Frequently, it will be better to structure your essay around concepts, rather than the chronological order of events. During the writing process, pay attention to the links between paragraphs. Whilst paragraphs are discrete units, the coherence of your argument will be enhanced by turns of phrase that show how a new paragraph relates to the previous one (eg: ‘No less significant was factor X’ ‘By contrast, factor X…’)
