Plagiarism, Allusion and Originality
In this essay I will discuss how some texts can appear to plagiarise others. I will analyse the case of Wordsworth and Evans. I will conclude that there is a difference between making superficial changes and making meaningful changes to a text. There is an obvious similarity between William’s poem and Dorothy’s journal entry. Yet his poem should not be thought of as an instance of plagiarism; he undoubtedly uses similar motifs like Dorothy, such as the daffodils, but his poem is vastly different to her text due foremost to its metrical structure and style. This epideictic quality in his poem allows for literary effects unlike those possible in the journal entry, such as the rhyme scheme or the symbolic use of language.
