6 Pages Essays / Projects Year: Pre-2021

West is parodying the popular culture enjoyed by 20th century audiences. He does this by exposing the way the culture industry works, and through the use of grotesque mode, which distorts the real world by means of caricature and stereotype. The rendering of place we’re presented with is sugary and cartoonish. In this place Tod is trying to find Faye, but instead he’s taken on a hopeless quest all over the studio lot. Through this passage West is trying to tell us that the way someone or something appears isn’t always an accurate indication of what they are. At the beginning of the passage Tod says that because of what Faye was wearing “he was sure that she was working in the picture called ‘Waterloo’”. I think it’s interesting that “from her dress” Tod is “sure” what Faye is doing, because his assumption based on her appearance turns out to be wrong. West satirises assumptions like these in a number of different ways.!
