The present and future of Parkinson’s disease: Treatments and a cure.

ANAT2010 - Concepts of Neuroanatomy

6 Pages Essays / Projects Year: Pre-2021

The degradation of neurons of the substantia nigra pars compacta and in turn, loss of dopamine cause Parkinson’s disease and its characteristic symptoms of bradykinesia, tremors and muscle rigidity. Current therapies are mainly pharmacological and despite providing short-term relief of motor symptoms, have no effect on non-motor symptoms such as hallucination, provide no neuroprotection and have side effects after long-term use. Therefore, focus has shifted to developing neuroprotective strategies and stem cell therapies. These developments support the hypothesis that a promising cure lays in stem cell therapy such as embryonic or induced pluripotent stem cells. There is however need for further research and development into stem cells before a cure is found.
