The 1948 Universal Declaration of human rights (UDHR) has opened the door to a new and improved way of life for many people across the world. The declaration was developed in order to ensure that every individual’s basic rights to freedom, justice, medical, food, peace and equality are no longer ignored. This essay will explain what the UDHR stands for and how its array of treaties complements its norms and standards. It will then discuss how the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties (VCLT) guides the formation and effects of the UDHR treaties. The relationship between the International Criminal Court (ICC) and state sovereignty will be analysed. The effects of a state government’s failure to respect and protect human rights will be explained. Finally, it will then evaluate the future challenges that are ahead in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015.
