In 1987, Deci & Ryan stated that there are two main types of motivation; intrinsic, where the motivation is internal, and extrinsic where motivation is driven by external rewards. There has been a considerably large amount of research on the topic of motivation in sport and exercise. After looking at previous literature, it became quite obvious that there were a number of different ways that scholars observed motivation in sport and that there was no specific way to undertake research into the topic.
