Unreliability of human memory for the details of past events
NEUR1020 - The Brain and Behavioural Sciences
5 Pages • Essays / Projects • Year: Pre-2021 • Previously uploaded under: PSYC1020 - Introduction to Psychology: Minds, Brains and Behaviour
psyc1020 assignment about the unreliability of human memory. Human memory is the ability to retrieve or recall experiencing particular events (Hyman & Pentland, 1996). Research in cognitive psychology over many years, has shown that memory can be altered by misinformation and is prone to error (Hyman & Pentland, 1996). Bartlett (1932) described the idea that memory is not retrieved as a whole entity, but rather created using information remaining in memory combined with related schemata. This essay will argue that human memory influenced by misinformation and false imagery, for the details of past events is not reliably accurate.
