Hazing within Australian Higher Education Research Proposal
SRAP2001 - Qualitative Social Research
9 Pages • Essays / Projects • Year: Pre-2021
In recent years, hazing practices and potential harm caused by hazing has become a largely recognised and rapidly increasing topic of concern. Academic studies on hazing has significantly influenced and created an exponential rise in the awareness of the severity and seriousness of the issue. Hazing is an important issue which cannot be further disregarded by society as it not only directly affects our current cohort but also for future generations to come. This research proposal aims to investigate and provide current interpretations and perspectives on the issue of hazing culture and its potential harm. The research aims of this qualitative study are to generate new understandings surrounding the issue of hazing whilst filling gaps in existing academic literature; addressed through a literature review on academic studies and utilising semi-structured interviews of University of New South Wales (UNSW) undergraduate students, an appropriate methodology providing diverse perspectives on this issue. Thus, the aim of this study will be approached through exploring and acquiring an extensive understanding of the research question, 'What understandings and awareness do university students have of hazing practices and culture, and its potential harm, in Australian higher education?'
