A2- Final Assignment- Increased participation of individuals and communities in decisions about their health The increased participation of individuals and communities affected by mental health issues in decisions about their health is paramount to improving the mental health of populations. Individuals affected by mental health concerns need to have a voice and participate in decisions that affect them. There are clear health inequities that have arisen through the abusive institutionalisation of mental health. Institutionalisation of patients with mental health issues was the norm for over 150 years (Kiesler:1982:349). However, in the 1970s and 1980s, a process known as “deinstitutionalisation” occurred in many Western and Western European nations, including Australia. This process sought to return people with a lived experience of mental illness into the community after initial treatment which may include hospital admissions or respite stays.
