As a member of the Teacher’s Union negotiating panel and teacher, my main interests in the negotiation were to maintain high education standards within the Newtown district increase teacher morale and avoid strikes. My intangible, personal interest was to provide a representative position on behalf of the 95% teachers in the area. The Union made clear to the Board of the Education panel that these were our interests and agreed that we were well aligned with the Board’s interests. This encouraged a collaborative approach and the transparency of an interest-based approach fostered trust between the two teams (Hiam, 2000).
