As early as 1911, the principles of scientific management were published by Frederick Winslow Taylor which main objective is to improve economic efficiency, especially labour productivity. Taylor observed the differences in the productivity between workers which are caused by several determinants such as talent, intelligence and motivations. He then tried to apply science into this problem to understand why and how these differences existed and how best practices could be analyzed and synthesized to decide the best way for the workers to perform their specific tasks. Based on the theory, there are several reasons why scientific management is still relevant in a predominantly service economy. Scientific management can be defined as a theory that uses scientific methods to decide the best way to perform work tasks. This essay will focus on the increase of production efficiency in industries, the impact on industrial organisations and the ability to adapt.
