Assignment 2 - Study of Train Design The word for bullet train in Japanese is comprised of the kanji characters that mean ‘new main line’: Shinkansen. The first high-speed train line was proposed by the Japanese Ministry of Transportation in the 1930's and the initial construction was made possible by Shima Hideo, chief engineer, and Sogo Shinji, the first president of the Japan National Railway who managed to persuade politicians to back the plan. Hideo was responsible for the organization and cooperation of all engineers involved and authorized each step of the project. Hideo reported to Shinji updating him with status reports and sought the sanction for each major decision made in the project. Other significant people responsible for its technical development were – Tadanao Miki, Tadashi Matsudaira, and Hajime Kawanabe based at the Railway Technology Research Institute (RTRI), part of JNR. They were responsible for much of the technical development of the first line - the Tokaido Shinkansen. The country's Shinkansen network has been developed over more than 35 years, and covers all main trunk routes centralizing its main headquarters in Tokyo. The Shinkansen train Lines officially began running in 1964.
