8 Pages Topic Notes Year: Pre-2021

The need to exit investments shapes every aspect of the VC cycle, from the ability to raise capital to the types of investments that are made. Proof of the importance of exits can be seen by looking at the European markets. In Europe, weak secondary market resulted in a lack of exit opportunities. Consequently, private equity funding has virtually dried up. Exit strategies also have broader social effect. Exits are easier in hot sectors; hence more funding gets directed to those areas. This may lead to a misallocation of resources.
