As this is such a wide issue, the need for it to be addressed has not been only in recent years but also far back into the past where the inequality was recognised. Francis Edgeworth was an economist who was mainly known for his contributions to economics through his application of mathematics to economic problems. However, he also acknowledges that the unequal pay between men and women was an issue to both society and the economy. This is exemplified as he wrote a number of papers to support his ideas of equal pay between men and women by defining when women should be entitled to equal pay to men.
