From the middle of the 19th century leading into the 20th century, female sexuality was continuously oppressed, trivialized and subjugated. During this time female sexuality, the significance of the clitoris and women’s orgasms were seen as problems that were heavily debated about by various medical experts and psychoanalysts. Through various sex research and studies, from Sigmund Freud to William Masters and Virginia Johnson, this gave society a better perception in the attempt to understand female sexuality. The domination of the vaginal orgasm not only brought about a sexual emancipation for women and a fight for the right to have control over their own bodies, but also became the basis of feminist struggles.
