A Research Assignment Regarding The Use of Mobile Culture Among Youths
MDIA2091 - Mobile Cultures
10 Pages • Essays / Projects • Year: Pre-2021 • Previously uploaded under: ARTS2091 - Mobile Cultures
Since the 1990’s, mobile phones have slowly evolved to a widespread commodity, used by people for a multitude of purposes. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, two-thirds of the Australian population owns a smart phone (2013). Furthermore, mobile phone usage is increasingly saturated, thus creating a culture with its unique characteristics, behaviors and actions. Pankraz states that global youth culture is driven by technology as opposed to music, sports and fashion, which is true in the previous generations (2002, 1).Thus, it is imperative to explore the mobile phone usage of today’s teens, as well as the impact associated with day-to-day consumption of this ubiquitous piece of technology. This research essay aims to study the use of mobile phones by today’s youth as well as its implications. This essay will mainly be explored with the concept of affordances. “Mobiles phones have introduced outstanding social affordances - technologies that provide possibilities and constraints for our lives (R.Lee., 2012, 1).” This essay describes and explains five aspects of mobile cultures: personal contact and accessibility, scheduling of activities and the use of time and space, personal identity and finally the changed perception of risk of being outdoors.
