Throughout the twentieth century, countries such as China and Japan was faced with several changes to their population and its demographics which had great impacts on their economic growth and development. Thus polices were created when facing its own population issue. China had experienced a fast population growth which led them to great success in economic growth with their large labour force. However, environmental and standard of living issues were raised and the government adopted police such as the One Child Policy to control its growth rate. On the other side, Japan is experiencing a declining and ageing population which puts a strain the the county's productivity due to the a declining supply of labour which causes the country to unlikely maintain positive growth. Therefore, fertility and elderly welfare and occupation policies were adopted to increase the nations birthrate and to reduce the effect of an ageing population. While some polices were successful in varying degrees, they also created long term implications in both countries.
