With the prevalence of mental illness now estimated to affect 1 in 5 people, developing effective treatments options and interventions is of great concern to researchers. This paper outlines the development of the 15 item Attitudes Towards Exercise Scale (ATES) which was used to assess if there was any relationship between attitudes towards exercise and symptoms of mental illness. The scale was developed based on research suggesting that lack of exercise can contribute to the genesis and course of mental illness.
