Sub-question 1: What explanations are given for religious views and customs surrounding sexual and reproductive rights? A key finding is that reproductive restrictions are common within religions, are often upheld by law, and criticized due to their medical irrelevance and discriminatory nature. Some restrictions are common between different religions, particularly restrictions pertaining to women’s sexual and reproductive autonomy (AHS, 2015). Restrictions include Limits on abortion rights, restrictions on contraceptive choice, and male and female circumcision (WHO, 2020). Although most religions do not have explicit rules forbidding abortion (Rogers, 2018), most include commandments similar to “Thou shall not kill”, interpreted to disallow abortions (BBC, 2014).
