Mark- B+ Darabont expresses injustice through the use of a wide shot and the adjustment of lighting when the guards are punishing the character “Fat Ass” for weeping in his cell. Injustice in explored through the use of a wide shot throughout the scene. The use of wide shot in this scene displays the harsh conditions that prisoners have to deal with and the threat of not conforming. This is then enforced by the guards taking the “Fat man” out of his cell and beating him which later resulted in death. This act shows the viewers the corruption and injustice that is taking place in the prison. This shot also shows the guard standing over the “Fat Man”, this represents that the guard has more power and Is a force to be reckoned with. Lighting also plays a key part in the exploration of injustice within the movie, throughout this scene the guard are dimly lit. This represents that the prison guards are dark and corrupted, and do not care about rules or regulations. On the other hand, the “Fat Man” has rays of light shining on him, this represents that the “Fat Man” has hope and that he is not corrupted or dark. Injustice is explored in this scene to set the tone and mentality of the movie to pursue viewers of power and order.
