Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is a procedure that screens the chromosomes of embryos and allows decisions about selective pregnancy termination and IVF to be made (1). It is in this context that the term “designer baby” is used to refer to a child whose genetics have been selected by the parents. The selection process can be used to produce a child with tissue (blood, organs, or bone marrow) that is compatible with an older sibling. The tissue can be used to treat the ailing older child through transplantation from the “saviour sibling” (3). This practice raises some interesting ethical and social issues, and people differ in their opinions about whether parents should have the option of producing a “designer baby” to save an older sibling.
